『Slave to the Grind』は、SKID ROWがデビュー作の大きなフックを残しながら、ギターの重量、セバスチャン・バックの絶叫、荒いリズムを一段深く押し出した第2作だ。バック(ヴォーカル)、デイヴ・スネイク・セイボとスコッティ・ヒル(ギター)、レイチェル・ボラン(ベース)、ロブ・アフーソ(ドラム)という布陣で、再びマイケル・ワグナーが手掛けた。曲は華やかなメタルの型を越え、苛立ちや緊張をそのまま音の圧力に変えている。 表題曲やスラッシュ寄りの“Monkey Business”の疾走から、“Wasted Time”“In a Darkened Room”の大きな感情まで、アルバムは強さと哀感を両立させる。本作は全米チャートに初登場1位を記録し、ヘヴィ・メタル・アルバムとして初の快挙を成し遂げた。“Quicksand Jesus”の荘厳さ、“Riot Act”のパンク的な突進も、アルバムの振れ幅を広げている。前作の親しみやすさから一転し、バンドはより攻撃的で硬質なサウンドへ舵を切った。本作は2倍プラチナに達し、批評的にも高く評価された。時代の変化に対し、音を軽くするのではなく重くして答えたバンドの代表作である。

Slave to the Grind is the second album, on which SKID ROW pushed guitar weight, Sebastian Bach's screams and rough rhythm a step deeper while keeping the debut's big hooks. With the lineup of Bach (vocals), Dave "Snake" Sabo and Scotti Hill (guitar), Rachel Bolan (bass) and Rob Affuso (drums), Michael Wagener handled it again. The songs go beyond the mold of glamorous metal, turning irritation and tension directly into sonic pressure. From the title track and the thrash-leaning drive of "Monkey Business" to the big emotion of "Wasted Time" and "In a Darkened Room," the album balances strength and pathos. It debuted at number 1 on the US chart, an unprecedented feat for a heavy metal album at the time. A signature work by a band that answered the changing times by making its sound heavier rather than lighter.
