Subhuman Race

『Subhuman Race』は、SKID ROWが初期の華やかなメタル感を削り、太いリフ、低い重心、苛立ちを帯びた歌で攻めた第3作だ。セバスチャン・バック(ヴォーカル)、デイヴ・スネイク・セイボとスコッティ・ヒル(ギター)、レイチェル・ボラン(ベース)、ロブ・アフーソ(ドラム)による演奏を、名匠ボブ・ロックがプロデュースした。バックのヴォーカルは派手さを保ちながらも、より切迫した表情を見せる。 “My Enemy”の攻撃性、“Breakin' Down”の叙情は、90年代の転換に向き合うバンドの姿を映す。“Beat Yourself Blind”“Frozen”のような楽曲にも、グランジ以降の重さと荒々しさが息づく。ボブ・ロックの硬い音像が、バンドの演奏を一体の塊として押し出している。“Subhuman Race”の疾走、“Into Another”の重さも、アルバムの攻撃性を支えている。パンテラらとのツアーを経て、バンドの音はより硬派なメタルへと接近した。しかし内部の緊張は限界に達し、翌年バックは解雇されることになる。結果的に本作はバック在籍時最後のアルバムとなり、時代の転換を刻む一枚となった。

Subhuman Race is the third album, on which SKID ROW shaved off the glamorous metal feel of the early days and attacked with thick riffs, a low center of gravity and irritated singing. The playing of Sebastian Bach (vocals), Dave "Snake" Sabo and Scotti Hill (guitar), Rachel Bolan (bass) and Rob Affuso (drums) was produced by master Bob Rock. Bach's vocals show a more urgent expression while keeping their flair. The aggression of "My Enemy" and the lyricism of "Breakin' Down" mirror a band facing the shift of the 1990s. The heaviness and roughness of the post-grunge era live on songs like "Beat Yourself Blind" and "Frozen" too. Bob Rock's hard sound pushes the band's playing out as a single mass. As it turned out, this became the last album during Bach's tenure, a record marking a turn of the times.
