セルフタイトルのデビュー作『Skid Row』は、ヘア・メタルの派手さを持ちながら、より荒々しくストリート寄りの質感を打ち出した一枚だ。ニュージャージー州トムズ・リヴァーで結成されたバンドは、セバスチャン・バック(ヴォーカル)、デイヴ・スネイク・セイボとスコッティ・ヒルの二本のギター、レイチェル・ボラン(ベース)、ロブ・アフーソ(ドラム)という布陣で、マイケル・ワグナーのプロデュースのもと制作した。バックの鋭い高音と重いリフが、曲を強く前へ押し出す。 “18 and Life”や“Youth Gone Wild”に象徴されるように、フックの大きさと緊張感が同居する。バラード“18 and Life”は全米4位、“I Remember You”は6位のヒットとなった。本作は全米6位・5倍プラチナに達し、当時のハード・ロック界に鮮烈な印象を残した。“Sweet Little Sister”“Piece of Me”のような楽曲でも、疾走するリフと歌えるフックが一体となる。セイボの旧友であるジョン・ボン・ジョヴィの縁が、アトランティックとの契約を後押しした逸話も知られる。バックの圧倒的なカリスマも、バンドの人気を一気に押し上げた。若さの反発心をアリーナ級のコーラスへ変えた、時代を代表する強力な一枚である。

The self-titled debut Skid Row is a record that put out a rougher, more streetwise texture while holding the flashiness of hair metal. Formed in Toms River, New Jersey, the band made it under Michael Wagener's production with the lineup of Sebastian Bach (vocals), the twin guitars of Dave "Snake" Sabo and Scotti Hill, Rachel Bolan (bass) and Rob Affuso (drums). Bach's sharp high notes and heavy riffs push the songs strongly forward. As symbolized by "18 and Life" and "Youth Gone Wild," big hooks and tension coexist. The ballad "18 and Life" became a US number 4 hit and "I Remember You" number 6. The album reached US number 6 and 5x Platinum, leaving a vivid impression on the hard-rock world of the time. A powerful, era-defining record that turned youthful rebellion into arena-sized choruses.
