Slave to the Grind is the second album, on which SKID ROW pushed guitar weight, Sebastian Bach's screams and rough rhythm a step deeper while keeping the debut's big hooks. With the lineup of Bach (vocals), Dave "Snake" Sabo and Scotti Hill (guitar), Rachel Bolan (bass) and Rob Affuso (drums), Michael Wagener handled it again. The songs go beyond the mold of glamorous metal, turning irritation and tension directly into sonic pressure.
From the title track and the thrash-leaning drive of "Monkey Business" to the big emotion of "Wasted Time" and "In a Darkened Room," the album balances strength and pathos. It debuted at number 1 on the US chart, an unprecedented feat for a heavy metal album at the time. A signature work by a band that answered the changing times by making its sound heavier rather than lighter.
