Sound of White Noise

『Sound of White Noise』は、新ヴォーカリストとして、アーマード・セイントで知られる、ジョン・ブッシュを迎えたANTHRAXが、スラッシュの骨格へ、より重いグルーヴと、陰影の濃い歌とを持ち込んだ、大きな転換作だ。ベラドナの、高く突き抜ける歌声とは対照的に、ブッシュの、荒々しくも、旋律性に富んだ歌声が、バンドに、90年代ならではの、新たな緊張感を与えている。ギターは、硬く刻まれながらも、曲ごとに、余白と、圧力との配分を、巧みに変えていく。 大ヒットしたシングル“Only”の、キャッチーで力強いメロディ、そして“Potter's Field”のドラマ性、さらに、デヴィッド・リンチの世界に着想を得た“Black Lodge”まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Room for One More”“Invisible”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。リズム隊の、太い推進力に、この新しい歌声が重なることで、従来とは全く異なる、確かな緊張が生まれている。 90年代の、重く陰鬱な音像を、巧みに取り込みつつも、バンドならではの、あの確かな切れ味を、決して消さなかったことで、その変化を、単なる路線変更だけには終わらせない、確かな説得力を持った一枚だ。速さを、ただ期待するよりも、グルーヴの、確かな粘りと、ブッシュの声が作り出す、不穏な陰影とに、じっくりと耳を向けたい。ANTHRAXの、新たな時代の始まりを告げる、力強い充実作と言える。

Sound of White Noise is a great transitional work on which Anthrax, welcoming the new vocalist John Bush, known from Armored Saint, brought heavier groove and shaded singing into the thrash frame. In contrast to Belladonna’s high, piercing voice, Bush’s rough yet melodic voice gives the band a new tension particular to the 1990s. The guitar, while chopped hard, deftly changes the distribution of space and pressure from song to song. From the catchy, powerful melody of the hit single “Only” and the drama of “Potter’s Field” to “Black Lodge,” inspired by David Lynch’s world, every song is engaging, while cuts like “Room for One More” and “Invisible” convey the work’s fullness. By this new voice layering over the rhythm section’s thick drive, a sure tension wholly different from before is born. A record with sure conviction that, by deftly taking in the heavy, gloomy sound of the 1990s while never erasing the band’s own sure edge, does not end the change as a mere shift of direction. Rather than merely expecting speed, one wants to carefully turn one’s ear to the sure tenacity of the groove and the uneasy shading Bush’s voice creates. A powerful, fulfilling work announcing the start of a new era for Anthrax.
