『World on Fire』は、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンが確立してきたネオクラシカル・メタルの美学を、濃密なギター・ワークで貫いた第18作だ。前作に続き、ギター、ベース、そしてヴォーカルを彼自身が担っている。高速のアルペジオ、クラシカルな旋律、重ねられたリフが、曲ごとに華麗で攻撃的な景色を作り出す。 ここではギターが主役であることを隠さない。それでも速さだけに終わらず、“Sorcery”“No Rest for the Wicked”のようなメロディの高揚や劇的なコード進行が、楽曲に独自のドラマを与える。器楽曲“Largo”“Nacht Musik”では、彼のクラシカルな素養が静かに息づいている。“Abandon”“Soldier”のような楽曲では、高速のアルペジオとクラシカルな旋律、重ねられたリフが一体となる。ヴォーカルも自ら手掛けることで、彼の芸術的ビジョンが隅々まで貫かれているのが特徴だ。長いキャリアで培った様式美が、一切の妥協なく示されている。疾走するギターとクラシカルな旋律が、隙間なく全編を満たしている。過剰なまでの様式美を楽しみたい時にこそ応える、イングヴェイらしさが凝縮された一枚である。

World on Fire is the eighteenth album, on which Yngwie Malmsteen carried through the neoclassical metal aesthetic he had established with dense guitar work. Continuing from the previous album, he himself handles guitar, bass and vocals. High-speed arpeggios, classical melody and layered riffs create a gorgeous, aggressive scenery for each song. Here he does not hide that the guitar is the lead. Yet it does not end in speed alone; melodic elation and dramatic chord progressions like "Sorcery" and "No Rest for the Wicked" give the songs their own drama. On the instrumentals "Largo" and "Nacht Musik," his classical grounding quietly lives. A record concentrating characteristically Yngwie qualities, answering precisely when you want to enjoy an excess of stylistic beauty.
