Talviyö

『Talviyö』は、SONATA ARCTICAが、初期の、あの疾走感を、そのまま再現するのではなく、あくまで、メロディと、歌の表情とを軸に、自らの現在地を、丁寧に描いた作品だ。フィンランド語で「冬の夜」を意味するタイトルの通り、キーボードの、繊細な色彩、柔らかなギター、そして、トニー・カッコの、語りかけるようなヴォーカルが、雪景色を思わせる、透明感と、静かな温度とを作り出している。速さよりも、あえて余白を大切にした楽曲が多く、音が鳴っていない、その瞬間まで含めて、メロディの、深い感情を聴かせる構成となっている。 冒頭“Message from the Sun”の力強い推進力、そして“Whirlwind”のドラマ性、さらに“Cold”のような曲まで、もちろん、高揚するサビや、リズミックな展開も、しっかりと用意されている。“Storm the Armada”“The Last of the Lambs”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。しかし、このアルバムの、その本質的な魅力は、派手な技巧よりも、旋律が、どのように陰り、ほどけ、そして再び、光へと向かっていくのか、その繊細な描写にこそある。 ポップな親しみやすさと、プログレッシヴなひねりとが、極めて自然に交わり、一曲ごとに、異なる美しい景色が生まれる一枚だ。過去の様式に、決して縛られることなく、長年培った、豊かな叙情性を、成熟した表情で、深く掘り下げている。SONATA ARCTICAの、柔軟な作曲力と、その歌心とを、存分に味わえる、聴き応えのある作品と言える。バンドの円熟が光る一枚だ。

Talviyö is a work on which Sonata Arctica, rather than reproducing the early speed as is, carefully draws its own present position around melody and vocal expression. As the title, meaning “winter night” in Finnish, suggests, the keyboards’ delicate color, soft guitar and Tony Kakko’s conversational vocals create a transparency and quiet temperature evoking a snowscape. There are many songs that deliberately value space over speed, and the construction lets you hear the deep emotion of the melody, including the moments no sound plays. From the powerful drive of the opener “Message from the Sun” and the drama of “Whirlwind” to a cut like “Cold,” lifting choruses and rhythmic developments are of course firmly prepared, while cuts like “Storm the Armada” and “The Last of the Lambs” convey the work’s fullness. Yet this album’s essential appeal lies precisely in the delicate depiction of how the melody shades, unravels and again heads toward the light, rather than flashy technique. A record on which pop accessibility and progressive twists intersect extremely naturally, and a different beautiful scenery is born in each song. Never bound by past styles, it deeply digs into the rich lyricism cultivated over long years with a mature expression.
