Undisputed Attitude

『Undisputed Attitude』は、SLAYERが自身の根にあるパンクとハードコアへの愛情を、休む間もない速度で吐き出した作品だ。原曲の荒さを残しながら、ギターとドラムの圧力は明確にSLAYERのものになっている。彼らが影響を受けた、往年のパンク／ハードコアの名曲を集めたカヴァー・アルバムである。 “Abolish Government / Superficial Love”“I Hate You”“Guilty Of Being White”といった楽曲では、短く、汚く、鋭く走り抜ける潔さが際立っている。マイナー・スレットやT.S.O.L.、D.R.I.といった、彼らが敬愛するパンク／ハードコア勢の楽曲を、SLAYER流の暴力性で塗り替えている。“Can't Stand You”“Mr. Freeze”“Violent Pacification”のような楽曲にも、荒々しいエネルギーが息づいている。アルバムにはジェフ・ハンネマンが80年代に別プロジェクト用に書いたオリジナル曲“Gemini”も収録されており、スラッシュ・メタルの帝王が自らのルーツであるパンクへの敬意を示した、異色にして痛快な一枚だ。カヴァー中心でありながら、バンドの攻撃性がどこから来たのかを知る手掛かりになる本作は、メタルとハードコアの接点を改めて見せた興味深い一枚だ。

Undisputed Attitude is a work on which SLAYER spat out, at unrelenting speed, the love for punk and hardcore at their roots. While keeping the roughness of the originals, the pressure of the guitar and drums clearly becomes SLAYER’s own. It is a covers album gathering the classic punk/hardcore songs that influenced them. On “Abolish Government / Superficial Love,” “I Hate You” and “Guilty Of Being White,” a decisiveness that runs short, dirty and sharp stands out. They repaint the songs of punk/hardcore acts they admire — such as Minor Threat, T.S.O.L. and D.R.I. — with SLAYER-style violence. Though covers-centered, it becomes a clue to where the band’s aggression comes from — an intriguing record that again showed the meeting point of metal and hardcore.
