『Diabolus in Musica』は、SLAYERが低く重いギター、硬く刻まれるリズム、切り裂くようなヴォーカルを通して、圧迫感のあるヘヴィネスを作り上げた作品だ。疾走一辺倒ではなく、遅めのテンポと反復するリフが緊張を強めていく。当時のヘヴィ・ミュージックの流れも取り込みながら、より重心の低いサウンドを追求した一枚である。 “Bitter Peace”“Stain of Mind”“Death's Head”“Perversions of Pain”といった楽曲では、従来のスラッシュ感覚を保ちながら、音の重量と不穏な空気が前面に出ている。“Love to Hate”“In the Name of God”のような楽曲にも、バンドの新たな表現が息づいている。“Overt Enemy”“Desire”“Screaming from the Sky”のような楽曲にも、バンドの新たな表現が息づいている。アルバム・タイトルはラテン語で「音楽の中の悪魔」を意味し不吉な響きを持つ三全音（トライトーン）を指しており、従来のファンからは賛否を呼んだものの、より重く沈み込むようなサウンドはバンドの新たな一面を示すものだった。異なる表情でなお危険なSLAYERを聴ける本作は、賛否を呼びながらも、バンドの実験精神を示す一枚である。

Diabolus in Musica is a work on which SLAYER built an oppressive heaviness through low, heavy guitar, hard-chugged rhythm and slashing vocals. Rather than all-out speed, slower tempos and repeating riffs strengthen the tension. It is a record that pursued a lower center of gravity while also taking in the heavy-music current of the time. On “Bitter Peace,” “Stain of Mind,” “Death's Head” and “Perversions of Pain,” while keeping the conventional thrash sense, sonic weight and an ominous air come to the front. Songs like “Love to Hate” and “In the Name of God” breathe the band’s new expression too. Letting you hear a still-dangerous SLAYER with a different face, it is a record that shows the band’s experimental spirit, even while drawing mixed opinions.
