『South of Heaven』は、SLAYERが前作の猛烈な速度だけを反復せず、遅く重いリフ、冷たい間、トム・アラヤの抑制された歌を取り入れた作品だ。曲は速度を落としても、むしろ不穏さと圧力を増していく。前作『Reign in Blood』の圧倒的な速さの後で、あえて緩急と重量感を追求した、意欲的な一枚である。 表題曲“South of Heaven”や“Mandatory Suicide”では、バンドの攻撃性がより大きな陰影を持っている。“Silent Scream”“Behind the Crooked Cross”“Ghosts of War”といった楽曲にも、バンドの深化した表現力が息づいている。“Read Between the Lies”“Spill the Blood”“Live Undead”のような楽曲にも、バンドの深化した表現力が息づいている。前作の圧倒的な速さをあえて封印するという大胆な選択がバンドの表現の幅を大きく広げており、スロー・テンポでこそ際立つSLAYERの持つ不吉な重量感を存分に味わえる一枚だ。ジューダス・プリーストの“Dissident Aggressor”のカヴァーも収録されている。スラッシュ・メタルの破壊力を、質感と緊張の面から拡張した本作は、速さ一辺倒ではないSLAYERの奥深さを示す重要な一枚である。

South of Heaven is a work on which SLAYER, rather than repeating only the previous album’s ferocious speed, took in slow, heavy riffs, cold pauses and Tom Araya’s restrained singing. Even as the songs slow down, they rather increase in menace and pressure. After the overwhelming speed of the previous album Reign in Blood, it is an ambitious record that deliberately pursued dynamics and weight. On the title track “South of Heaven” and “Mandatory Suicide,” the band’s aggression has greater shadow. Songs like “Silent Scream,” “Behind the Crooked Cross” and “Ghosts of War” breathe the band’s deepened expressiveness too. A cover of Judas Priest’s “Dissident Aggressor” is also included. Extending thrash metal’s destructive power in terms of texture and tension, it is an important record showing a SLAYER depth that is not all about speed.
