Seasons in the Abyss

『Seasons in the Abyss』は、初期の猛烈な疾走と、前作で深めた重いミドル・テンポを統合し、SLAYERのスラッシュを集大成した第5作だ。プロデュースはリック・ルービンとアンディ・ウォレスが手掛けた。デイヴ・ロンバードが参加した初期最後のスタジオ作でもあり、速さと重さのバランスが高い次元で結び付いている。 猛烈な“War Ensemble”で幕を開け、連続殺人犯を描いた“Dead Skin Mask”では不気味な緊張感が漂う。終曲のタイトル曲“Seasons in the Abyss”は、荘厳で暗黒的なミドル・テンポの名曲だ。前2作で示した速さと重さの両面を、一枚の中で見事に統合している。“Spirit in Black”“Hallowed Point”のような楽曲では、疾走とミドル・テンポが自在に切り替わる。タイトル曲のミュージック・ビデオはエジプトのピラミッドを背景に撮影され、話題を呼んだ。攻撃性、旋律、そして構築美が理想的に融合した本作は、『Reign in Blood』『South of Heaven』と並ぶ初期の代表作として高く評価されている。この後ロンバードが脱退し、バンドは新たな時代へと進んでいく。

Seasons in the Abyss is the fifth album, a culmination of Slayer's thrash that integrates the early furious speed with the heavy mid-tempo deepened on the previous record. Rick Rubin and Andy Wallace produced. It is also the last studio album of the early era to feature Dave Lombardo, binding the balance of speed and weight at a high level. Opening with the furious "War Ensemble," an eerie tension hangs over "Dead Skin Mask," depicting a serial killer. The closing title track "Seasons in the Abyss" is a majestic, dark mid-tempo masterpiece. Ideally fusing aggression, melody and constructive beauty, the album is highly regarded as an early signature work alongside Reign in Blood and South of Heaven. Afterward Lombardo left, and the band moved into a new era.
