Repentless

『Repentless』は、創設ギタリスト、ジェフ・ハンネマンの死を経て制作されたSLAYER最後のスタジオ作だ。2013年に急逝したハンネマンに代わり、エクソダスのゲイリー・ホルトがギターに加わった(ただしホルトは作曲には関与していない)。ドラムには『God Hates Us All』以来となるポール・ボスタフが復帰し、プロデュースは長年のリック・ルービンに代わってテリー・デイトが手掛けた。 タイトル曲“Repentless”はハンネマンへの想いを込めた激烈なスラッシュで、“You Against You”“Take Control”も容赦ない推進力を持つ。“Piano Wire”にはハンネマンの作曲クレジットが残されている。バンド固有の冷たく硬いリフと、剥き出しの攻撃性は健在だ。テリー・デイトの起用は、リック・ルービンが29年、9枚のアルバムにわたって務めたプロデューサーの座からの交代を意味した。“Cast the First Stone”“Vices”のような楽曲では、初期を思わせる高速のスラッシュが炸裂する。ニュークリア・ブラストからリリースされた本作は、バンドにとって新たなレーベルでの作品でもあった。喪失を経てなお、SLAYERが自らの語法を薄めることなく刻み付けた本作は、偉大なバンドの締めくくりにふさわしい一枚である。

Repentless is Slayer's final studio album, made after the death of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman. In place of Hanneman, who died suddenly in 2013, Gary Holt of Exodus joined on guitar (though Holt did not take part in the writing). On drums, Paul Bostaph returned for the first time since God Hates Us All, and Terry Date produced in place of longtime producer Rick Rubin. The title track "Repentless" is a ferocious thrash charged with feeling for Hanneman, and "You Against You" and "Take Control" carry relentless drive too. "Piano Wire" retains a Hanneman writing credit. The band's characteristic cold, hard riffs and exposed aggression remain intact. Carving on without diluting its own language even after loss, the album is a fitting close for a great band.
