Repentless is Slayer's final studio album, made after the death of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman. In place of Hanneman, who died suddenly in 2013, Gary Holt of Exodus joined on guitar (though Holt did not take part in the writing). On drums, Paul Bostaph returned for the first time since God Hates Us All, and Terry Date produced in place of longtime producer Rick Rubin.
The title track "Repentless" is a ferocious thrash charged with feeling for Hanneman, and "You Against You" and "Take Control" carry relentless drive too. "Piano Wire" retains a Hanneman writing credit. The band's characteristic cold, hard riffs and exposed aggression remain intact. Carving on without diluting its own language even after loss, the album is a fitting close for a great band.
