『World Painted Blood』は、SLAYERが長年培った暴力的なスラッシュ・メタルの語法を、切れ味鋭くまとめた作品だ。高速曲の爆発力、ぎこちないほど不穏なリフ、突き刺すようなヴォーカルが途切れることなく押し寄せている。オリジナル・メンバー4人が揃った、黄金期のラインナップによる作品である。 “World Painted Blood”“Hate Worldwide”“Psychopathy Red”“Unit 731”といった楽曲では、単純な懐古ではなく、曲ごとの表情に細かな変化がある。“Snuff”“Americon”“Not of This God”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した攻撃性が息づいている。“Beauty Through Order”“Human Strain”“Playing with Dolls”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した攻撃性が息づいている。本作の翌年以降ジェフ・ハンネマンは病に倒れ2013年に惜しくもこの世を去ったが、黄金期のメンバーが最後に揃った本作は、SLAYERというバンドの一つの到達点を示している。荒々しい勢いを保ったまま、バンドの長い歴史を踏まえた緊張感を鳴らしている。結果的にジェフ・ハンネマン在籍時の最後のスタジオ・アルバムとなった本作は、黄金期のSLAYERの底力を示す、力強い一枚だ。

World Painted Blood is a work on which SLAYER brought together, with sharp edge, the violent thrash-metal idiom they had cultivated over the years. The explosive power of high-speed songs, awkwardly ominous riffs and piercing vocals surge without a break. It is a work by the golden-era lineup, with the four original members assembled. On “World Painted Blood,” “Hate Worldwide,” “Psychopathy Red” and “Unit 731,” rather than simple nostalgia, there is fine variation in each song’s expression. Songs like “Snuff,” “Americon” and “Not of This God” breathe the band’s full aggression too. Keeping a rough momentum, they sound a tension informed by the band’s long history. Becoming, as it turned out, the last studio album with Jeff Hanneman, it is a powerful record showing the golden-era SLAYER’s underlying strength.
