God Hates Us All

『God Hates Us All』は、SLAYERが持つ切断的なリフと緊張感の高いリズムを、さらに圧縮して突き出した作品だ。曲は無駄を削ぎ、ケリー・キングとジェフ・ハンネマンのギターが鋭い断片を連射している。前作の実験を経て、バンドは剥き出しの攻撃性へと力強く回帰した。奇しくも2001年9月11日にリリースされた、因縁の一枚でもある。 “Disciple”“God Send Death”“Bloodline”“Here Comes the Pain”といった楽曲では、怒りを前面に出しながらも、バンドの演奏は極めて統制されている。“Darkness of Christ”“Payback”のような楽曲にも、剥き出しの憎悪が息づいている。“New Faith”“Threshold”“War Zone”のような楽曲にも、剥き出しの憎悪が息づいている。皮肉にもアメリカ同時多発テロ事件と同じ日にリリースされたことも本作の攻撃的な内容と相まって強い印象を残しており、前作までとは異なるより生々しくラウドなプロダクションを獲得した一枚だ。スピードだけではなく、止める場所と押し込む場所の設計が、この作品の凶暴さを支えている。より生々しく、より攻撃的なサウンドで、SLAYERの健在を強く示した一枚だ。

God Hates Us All is a work on which SLAYER compressed and thrust out their cutting riffs and high-tension rhythm even further. The songs cut away waste, and Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman’s guitars fire off sharp fragments in rapid succession. After the previous album’s experiment, the band returned powerfully to bare aggression. It is also a fateful record, released, as it happened, on September 11, 2001. On “Disciple,” “God Send Death,” “Bloodline” and “Here Comes the Pain,” while foregrounding anger, the band’s playing is extremely controlled. Songs like “Darkness of Christ” and “Payback” breathe bare hatred too. Not only speed but the design of where to stop and where to push supports this work’s ferocity. With a rawer, more aggressive sound, it is a record that strongly showed SLAYER was alive and well.
