『The Wild Life』は、SLAUGHTERが持つ明快なコーラスと華やかなハード・ロック感を残しながら、前作よりも多彩な曲調へ踏み込んだ第2作だ。クリサリスから1992年に発表され、レッド・ゾーン・スタジオなどで録音、全米ビルボード200に8位で初登場し、ゴールドを獲得した。ジャケットはジョン・コッシュがデザインし、マスタリングはボブ・ラドウィグが手がけている。マーク・スローターの歌は高く抜け、ティム・ケリーのギターは曲の勢いと抒情の両方を支え、デイナ・ストラムとブラス・イライアスがリズムを固めている。 表題曲“The Wild Life”、“Days Gone By”、“Real Love”がヒットとなり、7分に及ぶ“Times They Change”のような大きな展開や、“Reach for the Sky”の劇的な導入、“Do Ya Know”の重さも並ぶ。60分を超える長尺のなかで、キャッチーなナンバーの間に落ち着いた曲を置くことで、アルバムには自然な呼吸が生まれている。全曲をスローターとストラムが書き、演奏はデビュー作より一段と幅を広げた。メロディックな楽しさを失わずにバンドの表現領域を押し広げた、充実の一枚である。

The Wild Life is the second album, on which Slaughter kept its clear choruses and flashy hard-rock feel while stepping into more varied material than before. Released on Chrysalis in 1992 and recorded at Red Zone Studios among others, it debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and went gold. The cover was designed by John Kosh and the mastering handled by Bob Ludwig. Mark Slaughter’s singing soars, Tim Kelly’s guitar supports both drive and lyricism, and Dana Strum and Blas Elias lock down the rhythm. The title track “The Wild Life,” “Days Gone By” and “Real Love” became hits, alongside big developments like the seven-minute “Times They Change,” the dramatic opening of “Reach for the Sky,” and the heavier “Do Ya Know.” Across a run past sixty minutes, placing calmer songs between the catchy ones gives the album a natural breath. All written by Slaughter and Strum, the playing widens a notch on the debut. A full record that expanded the band’s range without losing melodic fun.
