『Thickskin』は、長い空白を経てSKID ROWが新体制で放った第4作だ。セバスチャン・バックの脱退後、新ヴォーカリストにジョニー・ソリンジャーを迎え、デイヴ・スネイク・セイボとスコッティ・ヒル(ギター)、レイチェル・ボラン(ベース)、フィル・ヴァローン(ドラム)という布陣で制作された。往年のストリート感を保ちつつ、より現代的なハード・ロックへと踏み出している。 “New Generation”の力強い開幕、“Ghost”のフックは、再始動したバンドの意欲を伝える。“Swallow Me (The Real You)”“Mouth of Voodoo”のような楽曲にも、太いリフとキャッチーさが同居する。カリスマ的な前任者の後を継ぐのは容易ではなかったが、ソリンジャーは自らの声で新たな章を切り開いた。“Born a Beggar”“See You Around”のような楽曲でも、力強いリフと親しみやすいメロディが息づく。1999年の再結成を経て、バンドはソリンジャーとともに新たな一歩を踏み出した。往年の激しさは保ちつつ、より肩の力を抜いたロックンロールも聴かせる。バンドが名前と持ち味を絶やさず、次の時代へ歩みを進めた一枚である。

Thickskin is the fourth album, released by SKID ROW with a new lineup after a long gap. After Sebastian Bach's departure, they welcomed new vocalist Johnny Solinger and made it with the lineup of Dave "Snake" Sabo and Scotti Hill (guitar), Rachel Bolan (bass) and Phil Varone (drums). Keeping the streetwise feel of old, they stepped toward a more contemporary hard rock. The powerful opening of "New Generation" and the hook of "Ghost" convey the will of a restarted band. Thick riffs and catchiness coexist on songs like "Swallow Me (The Real You)" and "Mouth of Voodoo" too. Succeeding a charismatic predecessor was not easy, but Solinger opened a new chapter with his own voice. A record on which the band advanced into the next era without letting its name and character fade.
