Oceanborn

『Oceanborn』は、NIGHTWISHがきらびやかなキーボード、疾走するギター、オペラティックなヴォーカルを結びつけた作品だ。クラシカルな空気を持ちながら、リズム隊とリフはメタルとしての強い推進力を保っている。前作から一気にスケールアップし、バンドの方向性を確立した第2作である。 “Stargazers”“Sacrament Of Wilderness”“The Pharaoh Sails To Orion”といった楽曲では、壮大な曲と叙情的な曲が交互に現れ、アルバムは濃い幻想性に包まれる。“Gethsemane”“Swanheart”“Walking In The Air”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作では正式ドラマーのユッカ・ネヴァライネンが加わりバンドのサウンドは格段にタイトになっており、疾走曲“Stargazers”や“The Riddler”のスピード感はパワー・メタル的な要素を強く感じさせる。クラシックとメタルの融合もいっそう深化した、バンドを一気に飛躍させた初期の代表作だ。ターヤ・トゥルネンの表現力も、前作から大きく飛躍している。バンドのシンフォニックな世界観を決定づけた、初期の傑作である。

Oceanborn is a work on which NIGHTWISH bound glittering keyboards, racing guitar and operatic vocals. While having a classical air, the rhythm section and riffs keep a strong drive as metal. Scaling up at a stroke from the debut, it is the second album that established the band’s direction. On “Stargazers,” “Sacrament Of Wilderness” and “The Pharaoh Sails To Orion,” grand songs and lyrical songs appear alternately, and the album is wrapped in a dense fantasy. Songs like “Gethsemane,” “Swanheart” and “Walking In The Air” breathe the band’s full playing too. Tarja Turunen’s expressiveness also leaps greatly from the debut. It is an early masterpiece that defined the band’s symphonic worldview.
