Wishmaster is a work on which Tarja Turunen’s classical voice and Tuomas Holopainen’s keyboards create a narrative air. The guitar and rhythm section support that grandeur while making the songs run firmly. It is the third album that further honed a fantasy worldview. On “She Is My Sin,” “Wishmaster” and “Deep Silent Complete,” they distill fantasy ornament into impressive melody. Songs like “The Kinslayer,” “Crownless” and “Dead Boy's Poem” breathe the band’s full playing too. This work, balancing grandeur and drive, defined the band’s early image. It is an important record that showed one completed form of symphonic power metal.
