Angels Fall First

『Angels Fall First』は、NIGHTWISHがアコースティックな響き、疾走するメタル、ターヤ・トゥルネンのクラシカルな歌声を組み合わせたデビュー作だ。後年ほど大規模ではないが、その素朴さが夢幻的な雰囲気を強めている。トゥオマス・ホロパイネンの構想から生まれた、バンドの記念すべき出発点である。 “Elvenpath”“Beauty And The Beast”“The Carpenter”といった楽曲では、静かな曲と力強い曲の対比が、アルバムを小さな物語のように進めている。“Astral Romance”“Know Why The Nightingale Sings”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい瑞々しい魅力が息づいている。フィンランドの田舎町キテーで結成されたバンドはこの時点ではまだ正式ドラマーを持たず打ち込みを併用しており、手作り感の残るサウンドの中に後の壮大な世界観の萌芽が確かに刻まれている。当初はホロパイネンのアコースティック・プロジェクトとして構想されたという、その原型がここにある。バンドのシンフォニックな世界観が芽を出した瞬間を捉えた、貴重な一枚である。後の大成功を予感させるフィンランドが生んだ才能の原点であり、素朴ながらも忘れがたい魅力を放つ一枚だ。

Angels Fall First is the debut on which NIGHTWISH combined acoustic resonance, racing metal and Tarja Turunen’s classical voice. It is not as large-scale as later years, but its plainness strengthens the dreamlike atmosphere. Born from Tuomas Holopainen’s vision, it is the band’s memorable starting point. On “Elvenpath,” “Beauty And The Beast” and “The Carpenter,” the contrast of quiet songs and powerful songs advances the album like a small story. Songs like “Astral Romance” and “Know Why The Nightingale Sings” breathe an early, fresh appeal too. Here is the prototype of what was said to have been first conceived as Holopainen’s acoustic project. It is a precious record that captured the moment the band’s symphonic worldview sprouted.
