『Theatre of Pain』は、MÖTLEY CRÜEが荒々しい初期の攻撃性を残しつつ、より華やかなグラム・メタルと大きなメロディへと踏み込んだ作品だ。ミック・マーズのギターは鋭いリフを刻み、ヴィンス・ニールの声は曲の派手な輪郭を強く印象付ける。バンドが新たな方向性へと舵を切った、転換作である。 “Smokin' In The Boys Room”“Home Sweet Home”“Louder Than Hell”といった楽曲では、軽快さと感傷が同居し、アルバムの振れ幅をよく示している。とりわけバラードの“Home Sweet Home”は、後のパワー・バラードの原型ともなった名曲だ。“Keep Your Eye On The Money”“Tonight (We Need A Lover)”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作からのシングル“Home Sweet Home”はMTVで大きな反響を呼びパワー・バラードというジャンルを確立する一因となり、商業的な大成功を収めバンドをスーパースターダムへと押し上げた重要作である。ハード・ロック・バンドがアリーナ規模の感情へ届いた、重要な一枚である。初期の攻撃性と新たな華やかさが交差する、バンドのキャリアにおける重要な転換作だ。

Theatre of Pain is a work on which MÖTLEY CRÜE, while keeping the rough early aggression, stepped into more flamboyant glam metal and big melody. Mick Mars’s guitar chisels sharp riffs, and Vince Neil’s voice strongly impresses the songs’ flashy outline. It is a turning-point work on which the band steered toward a new direction. On “Smokin' In The Boys Room,” “Home Sweet Home” and “Louder Than Hell,” lightness and sentiment coexist, well showing the album’s range. In particular, the ballad “Home Sweet Home” is a classic that became a prototype for later power ballads. Songs like “City Boy Blues” and “Save Our Souls” breathe the band’s full playing too. It is an important record on which a hard-rock band reached arena-scale emotion.
