Theatre of Pain is a work on which MÖTLEY CRÜE, while keeping the rough early aggression, stepped into more flamboyant glam metal and big melody. Mick Mars’s guitar chisels sharp riffs, and Vince Neil’s voice strongly impresses the songs’ flashy outline. It is a turning-point work on which the band steered toward a new direction.
On “Smokin' In The Boys Room,” “Home Sweet Home” and “Louder Than Hell,” lightness and sentiment coexist, well showing the album’s range. In particular, the ballad “Home Sweet Home” is a classic that became a prototype for later power ballads. Songs like “City Boy Blues” and “Save Our Souls” breathe the band’s full playing too. It is an important record on which a hard-rock band reached arena-scale emotion.
