『Mötley Crüe』は、新ヴォーカリストを迎えたMÖTLEY CRÜEが、過去の華美さよりも重いリフと硬いグルーヴへ重心を移したセルフタイトル作だ。音像は太く圧縮され、各曲はシンプルな骨格を執拗なリズムで押し出している。ヴィンス・ニールに代わり、ジョン・コラビを新ヴォーカルに迎えて制作された、異色の一枚である。 “Hooligan's Holiday”“Misunderstood”“'Til Death Do Us Part”といった楽曲では、荒々しい声と低く刻まれるギターが、バンドの持つ危険な色気を別のかたちで引き出している。“Power to the Music”“Poison Apples”“Hypnotized”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。ジョン・コラビの荒々しくソウルフルな歌声はバンドに新たな重量感をもたらしており、商業的にはヴィンス・ニール期ほどの成功を収めなかったがその硬派な内容は今なお一部のファンから高く評価されている。大ヒット作の再演ではなく、90年代半ばのヘヴィな感覚を正面から取り込んでいる。異色作でありながら、演奏の説得力が強い一枚である。ヘヴィな時代の空気を纏った本作は、バンドの歴史における重要な分岐点を示す一枚でもある。

Mötley Crüe is a self-titled work on which MÖTLEY CRÜE, welcoming a new vocalist, shifted their weight from past flamboyance toward heavy riffs and hard groove. The sound image is thick and compressed, and each song pushes out a simple frame with insistent rhythm. It is a distinctive record made welcoming John Corabi as the new vocalist in place of Vince Neil. On “Hooligan's Holiday,” “Misunderstood” and “'Til Death Do Us Part,” the rough voice and low-chugged guitar draw out the band’s dangerous allure in a different form. Songs like “Uncle Jack,” “Loveshine” and “Smoke the Sky” breathe the band’s full playing too. Rather than a re-run of the huge hits, it takes in the heavy feel of the mid-1990s head-on. Distinctive though it is, it is a record with strong persuasiveness of playing.
