『Reload』は、METALLICAが太くうねるリフ、腰の低いグルーヴ、荒々しい歌を軸に、前作『Load』から続くロックの手触りをさらに深めた作品だ。スラッシュの速度よりも、音の重さと曲の粘りで聴かせる場面が多い。前作の制作時に生まれた楽曲を核としながら、バンドは90年代型のヘヴィ・ロックを追求している。 “Fuel”の疾走感、“The Memory Remains”の不穏さ、“The Unforgiven II”の陰影は、バンドの幅のある表情を示している。“Devil's Dance”“Carpe Diem Baby”“Fixxxer”といった楽曲にも、ブルージーな感触と暗いメロディ、巨大なコーラスが交錯している。“The Memory Remains”ではマリアンヌ・フェイスフルがゲスト参加している点も印象的だ。“Better than You”“Bad Seed”“Prince Charming”といった楽曲にも、90年代のMETALLICAらしい重厚な魅力が息づいている。ジャケットには前作と同じくアンドレス・セラーノの作品が用いられ、前作『Load』と併せて聴くことで、バンドが挑んだ実験的な一時期の全体像がより明確に見えてくる。バンドが90年代に選んだ、もう一つの強さを鮮やかに刻んだ一枚である。

Reload is a work on which METALLICA further deepened the rock feel continuing from the previous album Load, centered on thick surging riffs, a low-slung groove and raw singing. There are many passages that win through the weight of the sound and the tenacity of the songs rather than thrash speed. Centered on songs born during the previous album’s making, the band pursues a 1990s-style heavy rock. The drive of “Fuel,” the unease of “The Memory Remains” and the shadow of “The Unforgiven II” show the band’s wide-ranging expression. Songs like “Devil's Dance,” “Carpe Diem Baby” and “Fixxxer” intersect bluesy feel, dark melody and huge choruses too. The guest appearance of Marianne Faithfull on “The Memory Remains” is striking too. It is a record that vividly carved another strength the band chose in the 1990s.
