『Garage Inc.』は、METALLICAが敬愛する楽曲の数々を、自分たちらしい音へと翻訳した、企画性の強いカヴァー・アルバムだ。単なる選曲集として眺めるよりも、METALLICAが外部の楽曲を自分たちの間合い、声、ギターの鳴りへとどう置き換えていくかを聴くことに、本作の面白さがある。原曲の知名度に頼るのではなく、リズムの押し出し、コーラスの厚み、ソロ前後の空気の作り方に、バンドならではの癖と美意識が浮かび上がってくる。 METALLICAのルーツにあるNWOBHMやパンク、ハード・ロックの名曲を、彼ら自身の演奏で甦らせた本作は、バンドの音楽的な出自を色濃く映し出している。ダイアモンド・ヘッドやミスフィッツ、モーターヘッドなど、彼らに影響を与えたバンドの楽曲が並ぶ二枚組の大作であり、METALLICAの音楽的なルーツを俯瞰できる貴重な作品となっている。収録された各曲の出自よりも、METALLICAというフィルターを通したときに生まれる統一感に耳を向けたい。代表作の流れからは外れた企画盤ではあるが、こうした作品にこそ、バンドが何に影響を受けて育ったかが率直に表れている。本編アルバムとはまた異なる角度から、METALLICAの音楽的なルーツを確認できる、興味深い一枚である。

Garage Inc. is a strongly conceptual covers album on which METALLICA translated a number of songs it reveres into their own sound. Rather than viewing it as a mere song collection, the interest of this record lies in hearing how METALLICA re-places outside songs into their own timing, voice and guitar tone. Rather than relying on the fame of the originals, the band’s own habits and aesthetics surface in the push of the rhythm, the thickness of the choruses and the way the air is built before and after the solos. Reviving with their own playing the NWOBHM, punk and hard-rock classics at METALLICA’s roots, it strongly reflects the band’s musical origins. Rather than each song’s origin, listen for the unity that arises when passed through the METALLICA filter. It is a project album outside the flow of the signature works, but what the band was influenced by growing up shows frankly in such a work. From an angle different from the main albums, it is an intriguing record for confirming METALLICA’s musical roots.
