『Load』は、METALLICAがスラッシュの速度だけに頼らず、太いグルーヴ、ブルージーなリフ、内省的な歌を使って新しい重さを探った作品だ。曲は長く息をし、ジェイムズ・ヘットフィールドの声も荒々しさと脆さの間を行き来している。ヴィジュアル・イメージの刷新も含めて、バンドは大胆な変化を選び取った。 “Until It Sleeps”の陰鬱なメロディ、“King Nothing”の重厚さ、“Hero of the Day”の叙情は、バンドの新たな幅を示している。“Ain't My Bitch”“Bleeding Me”“The Outlaw Torn”といった楽曲にも、より豊かでオーガニックな表現が息づいている。“2 x 4”“Cure”“Mama Said”といった楽曲では、カントリーやブルースの要素も取り入れ、より幅広い音楽性が展開されている。アルバム・ジャケットには現代美術家アンドレス・セラーノの作品が用いられ、視覚的にも大きな転換が示された、賛否を巻き起こしながらもバンドの新たな地平を大胆に切り開いた意欲作である。変化は大胆だが、リフの強さとバンドの演奏力は少しも揺らいでいない。従来の期待から距離を取ることで、METALLICAが持つロック・バンドとしての幅を大きく広げた、重要な一枚である。

Load is a work on which METALLICA, not relying on thrash speed alone, sought a new weight using thick groove, bluesy riffs and introspective singing. The songs breathe long, and James Hetfield’s voice moves between rawness and fragility. Including a renewal of the visual image, the band chose a bold change. The gloomy melody of “Until It Sleeps,” the heft of “King Nothing” and the lyricism of “Hero of the Day” show the band’s new breadth. Songs like “Ain't My Bitch,” “Bleeding Me” and “The Outlaw Torn” breathe a richer, more organic expression too. The change is bold, but the strength of the riffs and the band’s playing do not waver in the least. By taking distance from prior expectations, it is an important record that greatly widened METALLICA’s breadth as a rock band.
