『So Far, So Good... So What!』は、MEGADETHが鋭くねじれたリフ、急角度の展開、そしてデイヴ・ムステインの刺々しい歌を、真正面からぶつけ合った第3作だ。メンバー・チェンジを経て制作された本作は、荒れた空気を抱えながらも、曲にはただの混乱では終わらない、確かな構築性が息づいている。 冒頭のインスト“Into the Lungs of Hell”から続く大作“Set the World Afire”の攻撃性、そして名曲“In My Darkest Hour”では、スラッシュの攻撃性と、深い哀感とが、同じ熱量で激しくせめぎ合っている。セックス・ピストルズの“Anarchy in the U.K.”のカヴァーや、“Hook in Mouth”のような曲も、バンドの反骨精神を伝えている。 粗削りな質感も含めて、バンドが次なる大きな飛躍へと向かう、その途中の危うくも魅力的なエネルギーを刻んだ一枚だ。ドラッグ問題など、バンドが困難を抱えていた時期の緊迫感が、かえって作品に生々しい説得力を与えている。“Mary Jane”“Liar”“502”のような曲でも、ねじれたリフと刺々しい歌が結び付いている。混沌の中にも確かな才能が光る、初期MEGADETHの重要な過渡期作と言える。

So Far, So Good... So What! is the third album on which Megadeth collides sharply twisted riffs, sharp-angled development and Dave Mustaine’s prickly singing head-on. Made after lineup changes, it holds a raw air, yet a sure constructiveness that does not end as mere chaos breathes in the songs. In the aggression of the epic “Set the World Afire,” following the opening instrumental “Into the Lungs of Hell,” and the classic “In My Darkest Hour,” thrash aggression and deep sorrow fiercely contend at the same intensity, while a cover of the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.” and a cut like “Hook in Mouth” convey the band’s rebellious spirit. Including its rough texture, it is a record that inscribes the precarious yet appealing energy on the way to the next great leap. The tension of a period when the band faced difficulties such as drug problems gives the record a raw conviction instead. With sure talent shining amid the chaos, it is an important transitional early Megadeth work.
