『Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?』は、デイヴ・ムステインのねじれたリフ感覚と、クリス・ポーランドの流動的でジャズ由来のギターが、強くぶつかり合う第2作だ。曲は速く複雑だが、エレフソンのベースとドラムが生み出す、うねるようなグルーヴが、単なる技巧競争に終わらせていない。MEGADETHの個性を決定づけた、初期の代表作である。 冒頭“Wake Up Dead”の目まぐるしい展開、“The Conjuring”の攻撃性、そして不穏なフックを持つ表題曲“Peace Sells”は、バンドが持つ攻撃性と、社会への皮肉を端的に示している。“Good Mourning / Black Friday”のドラマ性、“My Last Words”の緊張感も、アルバムに深みを与えている。 冷戦期の緊張と、社会への鋭い眼差しを反映しながら、複雑なリフと知的な曲構成で、バンド独自の音楽性を確立した点に本作の価値がある。テクニカルでありながら、ロックとしての生々しいエネルギーも失っていない。“Devils Island”“Bad Omen”のような曲でも、複雑なリフと不穏な空気が結び付いている。METALLICAとはまた異なる、より複雑で毒気のあるスラッシュ・メタルを提示した、極めて重要な名盤と言える。

Peace Sells... but Who’s Buying? is the second album on which Dave Mustaine’s twisted riff sense and Chris Poland’s fluid, jazz-derived guitar collide strongly. The songs are fast and complex, yet the surging groove created by Ellefson’s bass and the drums keeps it from ending as mere technical competition. An early landmark that defined Megadeth’s character. The dizzying development of the opener “Wake Up Dead,” the aggression of “The Conjuring” and the title track “Peace Sells,” with its uneasy hook, plainly show the band’s aggression and social irony, while the drama of “Good Mourning / Black Friday” and the tension of “My Last Words” give the album depth. Its value lies in establishing the band’s own musicality with complex riffs and intelligent song construction while reflecting Cold War tension and a sharp social gaze. Technical yet not losing raw rock energy, it presents a more complex, venomous thrash metal different from Metallica — an extremely important masterpiece.
