War of Kings is the tenth album, on which Europe brought thick classic-hard-rock riffs, bluesy guitar and dignified vocals to the front. With the lineup of Joey Tempest (vocals), John Norum (guitar), John Levén (bass), Mic Michaeli (keyboards) and Ian Haugland (drums), producer Dave Cobb was brought in. Rather than 1980s glitter, it emphasizes raw band groove and amp sound, and the songs have an earthy strength. On songs like "War of Kings" and "Hole in My Pocket," weighty riffs and Tempest's powerful voice unite. Respect for their origins — Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin — is strongly reflected throughout. Rather than tracing past hits, it is a record that dug into the appeal of classic rock as mature players. A powerful record suited to those who want to enjoy the interplay of guitar and singing.
