Walk the Earth

『Walk the Earth』は、EUROPEが再結成後に深めてきた、70年代ハード・ロックの厚みと北欧メロディの感覚を結晶させた第11作だ。ジョーイ・テンペスト(ヴォーカル)、ジョン・ノーラム(ギター)、ジョン・レヴェン(ベース)、ミック・ミカエリ(キーボード)、イアン・ホーグランド(ドラム)という編成で、前作に続きデイヴ・コブがプロデュースを手掛けた。歪んだギターとオルガンの響きが音像を太くし、抑揚のあるヴォーカルが曲に人間味を与える。 “Walk the Earth”“The Siege”のような楽曲では、重厚なリフと壮大な展開が一体となる。華やかな80年代の印象だけにとどまらず、ブルースやサイケデリックな陰影も取り込むことで、作品は大人びた強さを得ている。演奏の一体感と楽曲の練り込みは、長いキャリアの成熟を確かに感じさせる。“Wolves”“Turn to Dust”のような楽曲では、重いリフと壮大な展開が一体となる。デイヴ・コブとの再びの共同作業は、前作で見出した骨太なサウンドをさらに洗練させている。長尺の楽曲にも冗長さはなく、演奏の緊張感が最後まで持続する。過去を再現するのではなく、長いキャリアを経たバンドが今の音で歩くための、力強い一枚だ。

Walk the Earth is the eleventh album, on which Europe crystallized the thickness of 1970s hard rock and a sense of Nordic melody it had deepened after the reunion. With the lineup of Joey Tempest (vocals), John Norum (guitar), John Levén (bass), Mic Michaeli (keyboards) and Ian Haugland (drums), Dave Cobb handled production following the previous album. Distorted guitar and organ resonance thicken the sound image, and dynamic vocals give the songs a human touch. On songs like "Walk the Earth" and "The Siege," weighty riffs and grand development unite. Not staying only with the flashy 1980s impression, by taking in blues and psychedelic shading, the work gains an adult strength. The unity of the playing and the crafting of the songs surely convey the maturity of a long career. A powerful record for a long-careered band to walk with today's sound, rather than reproducing the past.
