『Bag of Bones』は、EUROPEが70年代ハード・ロックとブルース・ロックの土台へと深く踏み込み、成熟したバンド・サウンドを作り上げた作品だ。大仰な装飾よりも、ギターの鳴り、リズムのうねり、ヴォーカルの表情に重心が置かれている。名エンジニア／プロデューサー、ケヴィン・シャーリーを迎え、より生々しく力強いサウンドを獲得した。 “Riches to Rags”“Not Supposed to Sing the Blues”“Firebox”“Bag of Bones”といった楽曲では、派手なフックを追うのではなく、曲が持つ空気と演奏の呼吸を大切にしている。“Demon Head”“Drink and a Smile”のような楽曲にも、バンドの円熟した表現力が息づいている。“My Woman My Friend”“Mercy You Mercy Me”“Beautiful Disaster”のような楽曲にも、バンドの円熟した表現力が息づいている。レッド・ツェッペリンやディープ・パープルといった彼らのルーツにある70年代ハード・ロックへの敬愛が全編に色濃く表れており、ゲスト・ギタリストとしてジョー・ボナマッサが参加した楽曲もあってブルース色をいっそう強めている。EUROPEの新しい時代の重みと渋さを感じられる本作は、再始動後の充実を示す、味わい深い一枚だ。

Bag of Bones is a work on which EUROPE stepped deep into the foundation of 1970s hard rock and blues rock, building a matured band sound. Rather than grandiose ornament, the weight is placed on the ring of the guitar, the surge of the rhythm and the expression of the vocals. Welcoming the fine engineer/producer Kevin Shirley, they gained a rawer, more powerful sound. On “Riches to Rags,” “Not Supposed to Sing the Blues,” “Firebox” and “Bag of Bones,” rather than chasing flashy hooks, they value the air of the songs and the breath of the playing. Songs like “Demon Head” and “Drink and a Smile” breathe the band’s matured expressiveness too. Letting you feel the weight and depth of a new era for EUROPE, it is a flavorful record showing the fullness of the post-reunion phase.
