『Believe』は、DISTURBEDがメロディの起伏と精神的な深さを大きく加えた第2作だ。前作に続きジョニー・Kがプロデュースを手掛け、ミックスはアンディ・ウォレスが担当した。デビュー作の攻撃性を保ちながら、ドレイマンはより幅広い歌唱と内省的な歌詞を披露している。彼自身のユダヤ系の出自や、音楽家としての葛藤が主題に織り込まれ、重量級のグルーヴに人間的な陰影を与えた。 “Prayer”は劇的な展開で本作を象徴する代表曲となり、“Remember”“Liberate”も強靭なフックを備える。硬質なリフと大きなコーラス、そして緊張と解放の対比が全編を貫く。“Bound”“Devour”のような楽曲では激しさが際立ち、アコースティックな終曲“Darkness”は新たな一面を示す。JUDAS PRIESTやIRON MAIDEN、PANTERAへの憧れを土台に、バンドは古典的なメタルにも通じる密度を志向した。硬質さと歌心の両立が、本作を前作からの明確な成長として印象づける。本作は米ビルボード200で初登場1位を獲得し、バンドにとって初のチャート首位となった。オリジナル・ベーシスト、ファズ・クマックが参加した最後の作品でもある。攻撃性と成熟を両立させた、飛躍の一枚である。

Believe is the second album, on which Disturbed greatly added melodic dynamics and spiritual depth. Johnny K produced again, following the debut, with Andy Wallace mixing. Keeping the debut's aggression, Draiman shows a wider range of singing and more introspective lyrics. His own Jewish heritage and struggles as a musician are woven into the themes, giving the weighty groove a human shading. "Prayer" became a signature song embodying the album with its dramatic development, and "Remember" and "Liberate" carry robust hooks too. Firm riffs, big choruses and the contrast of tension and release run throughout. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, the band's first chart-topper. It is also the last album to feature original bassist Fuzz Kmak. Balancing aggression and maturity, it is a record of real advance.
