The Sickness

『The Sickness』は、イリノイ州シカゴ出身のDISTURBEDが、ニュー・メタルに独自の重心を与えたデビュー作だ。ジョニー・Kのプロデュースのもと、ダン・ドネガンの跳ねるようなギター・リフ、マイク・ウェングレンのタイトなドラム、スティーヴ・“ファズ”・クマックのベースが強固なグルーヴを組み立てる。何より際立つのは、デヴィッド・ドレイマンの威圧的で表情豊かなヴォーカルだ。叫びと歌を巧みに使い分ける彼の声が、バンドに唯一無二の個性を与えている。 代表曲“Down with the Sickness”は、独特の擬音を交えたヴォーカルと重量級のリフで、バンド最大級のアンセムとなった。“Stupify”“Voices”“The Game”も鋭いフックを備え、TEARS FOR FEARSの“Shout”をカバーした“Shout 2000”も収録されている。ニュー・メタル全盛期にあって、ドレイマンのメロディアスな歌唱と硬質なグルーヴは一線を画していた。跳ねるリズムとメロディの効いたサビは、同時代のバンドとは異なる中毒性を持っていた。マルチ・プラチナを獲得し、バンドを一躍シーンの中心へ押し上げた、力強い出発点である。

The Sickness is the debut album by Disturbed, from Chicago, Illinois, giving nu metal a distinctive center of gravity. Under the production of Johnny K, Dan Donegan's bouncing guitar riffs, Mike Wengren's tight drums and the bass of Steve "Fuzz" Kmak build a firm groove. What stands out most is David Draiman's commanding, expressive vocal. His voice, skillfully alternating scream and song, gives the band a one-of-a-kind identity. The signature "Down with the Sickness" became one of the band's biggest anthems with its vocal — featuring a distinctive vocalization — and weighty riff. "Stupify," "Voices" and "The Game" carry sharp hooks too, and "Shout 2000," a cover of Tears for Fears' "Shout," is included. At the height of the nu-metal era, Draiman's melodic singing and firm groove set them apart. Earning multi-platinum status, it is a powerful starting point that pushed the band to the center of the scene.
