The Curse

『The Curse』は、スクリームとクリーン歌唱、そして大きなコーラスを一段と磨き上げ、ATREYUがメタルコアの感情表現を大きく広げた第2作だ。前作の荒々しさに、よりドラマティックな構築性とキャッチーさを注入し、バンドを一躍シーンの中心へと押し上げた飛躍作である。全米ビルボード200で32位、インディペンデント・アルバム・チャートでは1位を記録し、後に50万枚を超える売り上げでRIAAゴールドに認定された。 ビデオも作られた“Right Side of the Bed”と“The Crimson”は、MTV2やFuseで盛んにオンエアされた代表曲だ。シングル“Right Side of the Bed”はレースゲーム『Burnout 3』のサウンドトラックにも起用された。冒頭の“Bleeding Mascara”の疾走感から、ドラマティックな“You Eclipsed by Me”まで、緩急に富んだ楽曲が並ぶ。アレックス・ヴァルカッツァスの絶叫とブランドン・サラーのメロディアスな歌が絡み合い、ダークな歌詞世界と大合唱コーラスを両立させている。Ozzfestへの出演も果たし、バンドの名を一気に広めた、初期の代表作である。

The Curse is Atreyu's second album, on which they further polished screams, clean singing and big choruses to greatly widen metalcore's emotional expression. Injecting more dramatic construction and catchiness into the previous album's rawness, it is a breakthrough that thrust the band to the scene's center at once. It reached No. 32 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart, later certified RIAA Gold on sales exceeding 500,000 copies. "Right Side of the Bed" and "The Crimson," which got videos, are signature songs aired heavily on MTV2 and Fuse. The single "Right Side of the Bed" was also featured on the soundtrack to the racing game Burnout 3. From the drive of the opener "Bleeding Mascara" to the dramatic "You Eclipsed by Me," songs full of shifting dynamics line up. Alex Varkatzas's screams and Brandon Saller's melodic singing intertwine, balancing a dark lyrical world with singalong choruses. Also playing Ozzfest, it is an early classic that spread the band's name all at once.
