Among the Living

『Among the Living』は、切れ味鋭いリフ、前へと転がっていくリズム、そして、ジョーイ・ベラドナの、高く突き抜ける歌声とを、完全に一体化させた、ANTHRAXの最高傑作にして、スラッシュ・メタルの金字塔だ。単に、その速さだけを追うのではなく、曲ごとに、印象的なコーラスや、劇的なブレイクを、明確に配置し、会場全体を、力強く動かすための設計が、徹底されている。ホラー小説家スティーヴン・キングの世界などに着想を得た、その世界観も魅力だ。 冒頭を飾る、荘厳な表題曲“Among the Living”、そして、モッシュ・ピットを象徴する、あまりにも有名なアンセム“Caught in a Mosh”、さらに、ジャッジ・ドレッドを歌った“I Am the Law”は、その攻撃性と、覚えやすさとを、鮮やかに象徴する曲だ。ネイティヴ・アメリカンを歌った“Indians”、そして“Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。 ニューヨークならではの、ストリート感覚、あふれるユーモア、そして、重く力強いメタルの演奏とを、極めて自然に混ぜ合わせたことで、ANTHRAXだけのSF/ホラー的なスラッシュ像を、見事に確立した一枚だ。スラッシュ・メタルの「四天王」の一角としての、その地位を、確固たるものにした。ロック史に残る、圧倒的に完成度の高い、不朽の大傑作と言える。全メタル・ファン必聴の一枚だ。

Among the Living is Anthrax’s finest masterpiece and a landmark of thrash metal, completely uniting sharp riffs, forward-rolling rhythm and Joey Belladonna’s high, piercing voice. Rather than merely pursuing speed, it thoroughly designs to powerfully move the whole venue, clearly placing striking choruses and dramatic breaks in each song. Its world, inspired by the likes of horror novelist Stephen King, is also an appeal. The solemn opening title track “Among the Living,” the all-too-famous anthem “Caught in a Mosh,” symbolizing the mosh pit, and “I Am the Law,” singing of Judge Dredd, are songs that vividly symbolize its aggression and memorability, while “Indians,” singing of Native Americans, and a cut like “Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)” convey the work’s fullness. A record that splendidly established Anthrax’s own sci-fi/horror thrash image by mixing New York’s street sense, overflowing humor and heavy, powerful metal playing extremely naturally.
