『State of Euphoria』は、ANTHRAXが、高速リフ、跳ねるようなリズム、そして、ジョーイ・ベラドナの、抜けの良い歌声を用いて、スラッシュ・メタルの、確かな重さと、あふれる楽しさとを、見事に同居させた第4作だ。最高傑作『Among the Living』に続く本作は、その攻撃性を保ちながらも、決して閉じすぎることなく、楽曲には、常に、観客を力強く巻き込む、確かな開放感がある。バンドの、独特のユーモアが光る一枚だ。 冒頭“Be All, End All”の、張り詰めた緊張感、そして、フランスのバンド、トラストのカヴァーで、大ヒットした“Antisocial”の、即効性のあるキャッチーさは、このアルバムの持つ、二つの側面を、実によく表している。“Make Me Laugh”“Now It's Dark”“Who Cares Wins”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。とりわけ“Antisocial”は、バンドの代表曲の一つとなった。 スラッシュ・メタルという、シリアスになりがちなジャンルに、確かな遊び心と、コーラスの強さとを持ち込む、実にANTHRAXらしい一枚だ。攻撃的でありながらも、どこか陽性で、親しみやすい、その独自の魅力が、全開となっている。「四天王」の中でも、際立って個性的な、バンドの持ち味が、色濃く表れた、力強く聴き応えのある充実作と言える。バンドの明るさが光る一枚だ。

State of Euphoria is the fourth album on which Anthrax, using high-speed riffs, bouncing rhythm and Joey Belladonna’s clear voice, beautifully makes thrash metal’s sure weight and overflowing fun coexist. Following the finest masterpiece Among the Living, while keeping its aggression, it never closes too much, and the songs always have a sure openness that powerfully draws in the audience. A record where the band’s distinctive humor shines. The taut tension of the opener “Be All, End All” and the immediate catchiness of “Antisocial,” a hit cover of the French band Trust, well express this album’s two sides, while cuts like “Make Me Laugh,” “Now It’s Dark” and “Who Cares Wins” convey the work’s fullness. In particular, “Antisocial” became one of the band’s signature songs. A truly Anthrax-like record that brings sure playfulness and chorus strength to thrash metal, a genre prone to becoming serious. While aggressive, its own appeal — somehow positive and accessible — is in full bloom.
