Helix

『Helix』は、AMARANTHEがモダン・メタル、エレクトロニック・ロック、ポップの境界をさらに鮮明に描いた第5作だ。2018年10月にスパインファームから発表された。ジェイク・Eに代わりダイナスティのニルス・モーリンが加入した最初の作品で、作曲2か月、録音2か月という驚異的な速さで仕上げられた。エリーズ・リード、モーリン、ヘンリク・イングルンドによる三者三様の声が、同じ旋律に異なる温度を与え、楽曲を立体的に動かしていく。作曲はオロフ・モルクとリードの二人が中心となり、録音は変わらずハンセン・スタジオでヤコブ・ハンセンが手がけている。 低くチューニングされたギターと硬い打ち込み風の質感は十分に重いが、サビへ入ると視界が一気に開け、メロディが明快に浮かび上がる。“365”“Countdown”“Helix”では、攻撃性とキャッチーさを対立させず、互いを引き立てる要素として使っている。リフの切れ味、電子音のフック、声の受け渡しが短い時間の中で整理されているため、情報量が多くても曲の芯はぶれない。重さ、華やかさ、即効性を一枚の流れへまとめた本作は、バンドの独自性を最も分かりやすく示す作品の一つである。

Helix is the fifth album, drawing the boundaries of modern metal, electronic rock and pop even more sharply. Released on Spinefarm in October 2018. It's the first album with Dynazty's Nils Molin, who replaced Jake E, and it was finished at an astonishing pace — two months writing, two months recording. Three distinct voices from Elize Ryd, Molin and Henrik Englund give the same melody different temperatures and move the material in three dimensions. Olof Mörck and Ryd were the writing core, and it was again recorded at Hansen Studios with Jacob Hansen. The low-tuned guitars and hard programmed-sounding textures are plenty heavy, but when the chorus arrives the view opens at once and the melody surfaces clearly. On “365,” “Countdown” and “Helix,” aggression and catchiness aren't set against each other but used to lift each other up. Because riff edge, electronic hooks and vocal handoffs are organized within short spans, the songs' core never wavers despite the density. Gathering weight, brilliance and immediacy into one flow, this is among the clearest demonstrations of the band's individuality.
