Biography
TRiDENT is a Japanese three-piece women’s rock band featuring ASAKA on vocals and guitar, SERINA on bass and chorus, and NAGISA on drums. The group developed from the Osaka-based Girls Rock Band Kakumei and restarted under the TRiDENT name on May 1, 2020. Its sound condenses sharp guitar riffs, melodic bass movement, highly mobile drumming and a powerful clear vocal into the density of three players, crossing hard rock, alternative metal, loud rock and an accessible pop instinct.
The first full album under the new name, ADVANCE GENERATION, arrived in March 2021. During the same year, the trio released Saikousou, which rebuilt songs from its earlier history, and the paired UNDER GROUND and OVER GROUND EPs, quickly establishing a distinct identity. Saikousou II and D-X followed in 2022, balancing historical continuity through re-recording with forward motion through new material. Songs such as “CRY OUT” and “Signal” became central examples of the band’s ability to connect heavy physical playing with large melodic hooks.
Dream Up in 2023 framed ambition as practical action through “KICKASS,” “Repaint” and “NEO FUTURE.” The 2024 EP spice “X” expanded the palette with nocturnal and intimate shades, and the second full album DUX reorganized the recent catalog into a twelve-track statement. TRiDENT’s arrangements allow every part to remain clearly audible while the choruses create the scale of a much larger ensemble, an approach that has become especially effective in live performance in Japan and overseas.
TRiDENT made its major-label debut through King Records in 2025 and released BLUE DAWN. Tracks including “Reimei no Uta” and “NEW ERA” retain the attack of the independent period while opening the melody toward a broader audience. The band’s defining strength is not simply that it is an all-female act, but that it turns the apparent limitation of a three-piece lineup into clarity, momentum and identity. Trivia
TRiDENT run a show called Oji Matsuri that only men aged 35 and over may attend. It began in 2023, devised by the members themselves, out of a wish to make a place for a generation that carries responsibility both at work and at home. The third edition took place at Daikanyama UNIT on 20 September 2025 and drew 350 of them. From the stage ASAKA told the room she wanted them to find growing older something to look forward to, and named a goal of one day staging Oji Matsuri at the Ryogoku Kokugikan.
The move to King Records was announced on 23 August 2025, at a headline show at Daikanyama UNIT. The show was billed as "Continue." — the word the band started from, with a full stop added. Late in the show, after "be with you," a film played in which the members said they were putting a full stop to the TRiDENT that had begun with the song "Continue," and stepping off in a new direction. NAGISA has said the ominous-looking title was chosen precisely to catch the audience out, and that the announcement came as a surprise. The show sold out, with around 500 people there.
The lead track of the major-label debut EP, "Reimei no Uta," was written for TRiDENT by Nob of MY FIRST STORY. It came out of an after-party. The band had been naming him as an arranger they wanted to work with, but had never met him, and on the night they hesitated over whether to go and say hello before deciding to. By Nob's account, over drinks they told him they liked a song he had done for Wagamama Rakia, he offered to write one for them on that basis, and they accepted on the spot. From their side, they had gone over expecting nothing.
On 15 July 2026 JPU Records, the British label specialising in Japanese music, announced that it was putting TRiDENT's digital single "Candle" out across Europe and North America. Pre-orders opened the same day for an international CD edition of BLUE DAWN, which the label describes as that record's first international CD release. "Candle" was written as the theme song for the Japanese television drama 35-sai, Ima Sara Koi toka Arienai; ASAKA wrote both words and music, and Shota Horie arranged it.
ASAKA explained the name in a 2021 interview. TRiDENT means a three-pronged spear, and the idea behind it was that the three of them should become a single spear rather than three people each firing off in their own direction. Under the previous name, Girls Rock Band Kakumei, she has said the feeling was of each member throwing what she wanted to play at the others; as TRiDENT the weight shifted toward the three of them building one song together properly.
In November 2019 the drummer of the previous band told them she wanted to leave; the departure itself came in March 2020. The band kept it quiet until February 2020, on the reasoning that if word spread and reached the audience, the shows they still had to play would take on an awkward air. Asked who the next drummer should be, ASAKA and SERINA said a name on a count of three and both said NAGISA. She was in a band called Quince and they knew her from shared bills, which made her awkward to approach — until word reached them that she herself wanted out of Quince, at which point they asked.
The first song written as TRiDENT was "Continue," put together by ASAKA and SERINA in December 2019, after the previous drummer's exit had been settled. The decision to change the band's name was taken at the same point. The lyric came last. While the band was on hold ASAKA had seen people reacting as though losing the drummer who anchored it meant the band was finished, and she has said the words came straight out of how galling that was — a plain "just watch me."
On the EP BLUE DAWN, "Koi no Magic Potion" is a cover of a 1991 song by Sukanchi, used as the opening theme of the TV anime Potion, Waga Mi wo Tasukeru — a tie-up that turns on the word "potion" appearing in both titles. Sukanchi's ROLLY played on it, sang backing vocals and produced. The band cut it live, all together in one take for the sake of the groove, rather than tracking parts separately as they normally do. ASAKA sang the lyric, written from a man's point of view, in the original key.
