The Seventh Sign

『The Seventh Sign』は、マイク・ヴェセーラを迎えたイングヴェイ・マルムスティーンが、ネオクラシカルな疾走感とドラマティックな歌を、高密度で結び付けた第7作だ。高速フレーズは当然のように現れるが、リフやメロディにも明確な上昇と下降があり、曲としての起伏がしっかり保たれている。 “Never Die”の勢い、“Meant to Be”の重厚さ、“Forever One”のバラードとしての伸び、そして表題曲“Seventh Sign”や“Pyramid of Cheops”の劇性まで、収録曲の表情は幅広い。ギターは主役でありながら、歌を押しのけるだけではなく、曲の緊張と解放を演出する役割を果たしている。 技巧の見せ場を数多く揃えながらも、曲としての完成度を保っているため、華麗さと聴きやすさが比較的自然に共存している。ソロの速さに加え、ギターと歌が同じ旋律を受け渡す場面や、バラードでの音色の変化にも注目したい。“Brothers”“Bad Blood”のような曲でも、劇的な歌メロと鋭いギターが結び付き、アルバムに一貫したドラマ性を与えている。ヴォーカルとギターの掛け合いが緊密で、曲としての聴き応えが大きく増している。中期イングヴェイの充実を示す、ドラマティックで完成度の高い一枚と言える。

The Seventh Sign is the seventh album on which Yngwie Malmsteen, joined by Michael Vescera, binds neoclassical speed and dramatic singing at high density. Fast phrasing appears as a matter of course, but the riffs and melodies also have clear rises and falls, keeping the dynamics of the songs firmly intact. From the drive of “Never Die” and the weight of “Meant to Be” to the balladic reach of “Forever One” and the drama of the title track “Seventh Sign” and “Pyramid of Cheops,” the faces of the songs are wide-ranging. The guitar is the lead, yet it does more than push the vocals aside; it stages the tension and release of each song. Assembling many showcases of technique while keeping the songs polished, it lets flair and accessibility coexist fairly naturally. Beyond the speed of the solos, it rewards attention to the passages where guitar and voice hand off the same melody and to the changes of tone in the ballads — a dramatic, strongly realized record showing the fullness of mid-period Yngwie.
