『Fire & Ice』は、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンの高速フレーズ、バロック的な旋律、重いリフを、大きなスケールでまとめた第6作だ。ヨラン・エドマンの伸びやかな歌が、ギターの圧倒的な運動量に、明快なメロディの輪郭を与えている。技巧と歌心の均衡が保たれた、充実の一枚である。 冒頭“Perpetual”のドラマティックな導入から、“Dragonfly”“Teaser”の疾走、“Cry No More”の叙情、表題曲“Fire and Ice”の劇性まで、収録曲は幅広い表情を持つ。長尺の“Leviathan”では、クラシカルな展開とヘヴィ・メタルの推進力が鮮やかに交差する。 超絶技巧はあくまで曲のドラマを押し上げる力として働き、独奏の連続には陥っていない。ギター・ヒーローとしての華やかさと、作曲家としての構築性を同時に味わえる点が、本作最大の魅力だ。“No Mercy”“All I Want Is Everything”のような曲でも、鋭いギターとキャッチーな歌メロが結び付き、アルバムに勢いと親しみやすさを与えている。速弾きの華やかさと歌ものとしての完成度が、これまで以上に高い次元で両立している。日本を含め商業的にも大きな成功を収め、90年代初頭のイングヴェイの充実を示す、完成度の高いメロディック・メタル作品と言える。

Fire & Ice is the sixth album on which Yngwie Malmsteen gathers fast phrasing, Baroque melody and heavy riffs on a large scale. Göran Edman’s soaring voice gives a clear melodic outline to the guitar’s overwhelming motion — a fulfilling record where technique and songcraft stay in balance. From the dramatic introduction of the opener “Perpetual” to the speed of “Dragonfly” and “Teaser,” the lyricism of “Cry No More” and the drama of the title track “Fire and Ice,” the songs carry wide-ranging faces, and in the long “Leviathan” classical development and heavy-metal drive cross vividly. The dazzling technique works purely as a force lifting the drama of the songs, never falling into a string of solos. Its greatest appeal is that you can savor the flair of a guitar hero and the construction of a composer at once. A major commercial success including in Japan, it is a strongly realized melodic-metal record that shows Yngwie’s fullness in the early 1990s.
