Inspiration is a covers album on which Yngwie Malmsteen takes up the songs that became his roots, sounding the guitar not only to display dazzling technique but for melody and singing. With past vocalists joining, a different color and memory of an era rises in each song. From Kansas’s “Carry on Wayward Son,” Rainbow’s “Gates of Babylon” and Deep Purple’s “Pictures of Home” and “Child in Time” to Scorpions’ “The Sails of Charon” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Manic Depression,” the very selection tells the story of Yngwie’s musical origins. Keeping respect for the originals, fast phrasing, classical fingering and strong vibrato give his outline throughout.
