『Eclipse』は、YNGWIE J. MALMSTEEN'S RISING FORCEが、疾走するリフ、厚いコーラス、物語性のある旋律を組み合わせ、パワー・メタルの高揚を大きく描いた第5作だ。クラシカルな速弾きと劇的な歌メロを結び付け、技巧のきらめきを、強い曲の推進力へと変えている。 “Making Love”の伸びやかなメロディ、“Save Our Love”の叙情、“Motherless Child”のドラマ性、“Judas”“See You in Hell”の攻撃性まで、収録曲は多彩な表情を見せる。ギターの華やかな運動量が前面に出ながらも、歌メロの明快さが作品全体を親しみやすくしている。 前作『Odyssey』で見せた歌重視の方向をさらに推し進め、メロディック・ハードとしての完成度を高めた一枚だ。超絶技巧を誇示するだけでなく、曲そのものの魅力とフックを大切にした姿勢が全編を貫く。“Bedroom Eyes”“Faultline”のような曲でも、疾走感とキャッチーなメロディが同居し、アルバムに一貫した推進力を与えている。技巧を誇示するよりも、曲そのものの魅力で聴かせようとする姿勢が全編を貫いている。イングヴェイのギターと伸びやかなヴォーカルが結び付いた、聴きやすく充実したメロディック・メタル作品と言える。

Eclipse is the fifth album on which Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force combines racing riffs, thick choruses and narrative melody to paint power metal’s uplift on a large canvas. Binding classical speed to dramatic vocal melodies, it turns the sparkle of technique into strong forward drive. From the soaring melody of “Making Love” and the lyricism of “Save Our Love” to the drama of “Motherless Child” and the aggression of “Judas” and “See You in Hell,” the songs show varied faces. The guitar’s flashy motion comes to the fore, yet the clarity of the vocal melodies keeps the whole approachable. Pushing further the song-focused direction shown on the previous Odyssey, it raises the record’s standing as melodic hard rock. Rather than merely showing off dazzling technique, a care for the appeal and hooks of the songs themselves runs throughout.
