Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra is an ambitious work in which Yngwie Malmsteen brings his long-held devotion to classical music to fruition in the form of a concerto for full orchestra and electric guitar. Rather than a rock album, it is conceived as a genuine orchestral work in which the guitar, as a solo instrument, converses with the orchestra. In each movement, the guitar takes the role of the soloist in a concerto, developing themes in dialogue with the orchestra. Fast playing and neoclassical phrasing remain, but here they dissolve naturally into a classical idiom and function as part of the musical structure rather than as decoration — an intriguing distinction. For a musician who has revered Baroque and Romantic styles, the record is an arrival point at which he faces his own musical roots head-on.
