The Unforgiving

『The Unforgiving』は、WITHIN TEMPTATIONがコンセプト性のある物語を軸に、シャロン・デン・アデルの透明感ある歌、ヘヴィなギター、エレクトロニックなアクセントを組み合わせた作品だ。壮大なオーケストレーションを控えめにし、より直線的でキャッチーな曲作りへと踏み出している。コミックと連動した物語を持つ、野心的なコンセプト・アルバムである。 “Faster”“Shot in the Dark”“Sinéad”といった楽曲では、各曲が映画の場面のように鮮やかで、メロディは強い感情を素早く運んでいる。“In the Middle of the Night”“A Demon's Fate”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は「The Unforgiving」というコミックおよび短編映画シリーズと連動した壮大なマルチメディア・プロジェクトの一環であり、“Iron”“Stairway to the Skies”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。従来のゴシック路線から、より80年代的で明快なロックへと踏み出した意欲作である。80年代のロックやポップを思わせる、明快なフックが全編を彩る。バンドの幻想性を保ちながら、新しい親しみやすさを得た一枚だ。

The Unforgiving is a work on which WITHIN TEMPTATION, centered on a conceptual story, combined Sharon den Adel’s clear singing, heavy guitar and electronic accents. Restraining grand orchestration, it stepped toward more linear, catchy songwriting. With a story linked to a comic, it is an ambitious concept album. On “Faster,” “Shot in the Dark” and “Sinéad,” each song is vivid like a film scene, and the melody quickly carries strong emotion. Songs like “In the Middle of the Night” and “A Demon's Fate” breathe the band’s full playing too. Clear hooks evoking 1980s rock and pop color the whole. It is a record that gained a new accessibility while keeping the band’s fantasy.
