The Unforgiving is a work on which WITHIN TEMPTATION, centered on a conceptual story, combined Sharon den Adel’s clear singing, heavy guitar and electronic accents. Restraining grand orchestration, it stepped toward more linear, catchy songwriting. With a story linked to a comic, it is an ambitious concept album.
On “Faster,” “Shot in the Dark” and “Sinéad,” each song is vivid like a film scene, and the melody quickly carries strong emotion. Songs like “In the Middle of the Night” and “A Demon's Fate” breathe the band’s full playing too. Clear hooks evoking 1980s rock and pop color the whole. It is a record that gained a new accessibility while keeping the band’s fantasy.
