『Dog Eat Dog』は、WARRANTが従来の華やかなイメージを保ちながら、より太いリフと硬いグルーヴを前面に出した作品だ。ジャニ・レインの歌はキャッチーさを失わず、ギターは曲ごとに荒々しい力を加えている。バンドがより成熟したロックへと踏み出した、意欲的な一枚である。 “Machine Gun”“Bonfire”“The Bitter Pill”といった楽曲では、大きなサビと重い演奏が拮抗し、アルバムには時代の変化を受け止めようとする緊張感がある。“Andy Warhol Was Right”“All My Bridges Are Burning”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。1992年に発表された本作はグランジ・ムーブメントの台頭というグラム・メタルにとって最も厳しい時期に生み出されており、“April 2031”“Hollywood (so far, so good)”“Inside Out”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。商業的には前2作ほどの成功を収められなかったものの、後年再評価が進んだ意欲作である。グランジ台頭という逆風の中でも、バンドは自らの個性を示している。メロディ感覚を残したまま、よりタフなロックへ進んだ一枚である。

Dog Eat Dog is a work on which WARRANT, while keeping their previous gorgeous image, foregrounded thicker riffs and a harder groove. Jani Lane’s singing does not lose catchiness, and the guitar adds a wild force to each song. It is an ambitious record on which the band stepped toward more mature rock. On “Machine Gun,” “Bonfire” and “The Bitter Pill,” big choruses and heavy playing contend, and the album has a tension that tries to take in the change of the times. Songs like “Andy Warhol Was Right” and “All My Bridges Are Burning” breathe the band’s full playing too. Even against the headwind of grunge’s rise, the band shows its own individuality. It is a record that advanced to tougher rock while keeping a melodic sense.
