Dog Eat Dog is a work on which WARRANT, while keeping their previous gorgeous image, foregrounded thicker riffs and a harder groove. Jani Lane’s singing does not lose catchiness, and the guitar adds a wild force to each song. It is an ambitious record on which the band stepped toward more mature rock.
On “Machine Gun,” “Bonfire” and “The Bitter Pill,” big choruses and heavy playing contend, and the album has a tension that tries to take in the change of the times. Songs like “Andy Warhol Was Right” and “All My Bridges Are Burning” breathe the band’s full playing too. Even against the headwind of grunge’s rise, the band shows its own individuality. It is a record that advanced to tougher rock while keeping a melodic sense.
