『Balance』は、VAN HALENが持つ明るい躍動感を残しながら、より重く内省的な色合いへと踏み込んだ作品だ。エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレンのギターは派手な技巧だけでなく、曲の空気を変えるテクスチャーとしても機能している。バンド内の緊張が高まる中で制作された、陰影に富んだ一枚である。 “Can't Stop Lovin' You”の開放感と“The Seventh Seal”の硬質さの間を行き来し、アルバムはサミー・ヘイガー期の幅を示している。“Not Enough”“Amsterdam”“Aftershock”といった楽曲にも、バンドの充実した表現力が息づいている。“Strung Out”“Big Fat Money”“Feelin'”のような楽曲にも、バンドの多彩な魅力が息づいている。本作の制作時期にはエディ・ヴァン・ヘイレンの健康問題やバンド内の対立が深刻化していたが、インストゥルメンタル“Baluchitherium”ではエディのギターが存分に披露され、緊張感を孕みながらもヴァン・ヘイガー期を締めくくるにふさわしい充実した一枚となっている。メロディと演奏の緊張感が共存する本作は、全米チャートで第1位を獲得した。ヘイガーが参加した最後のスタジオ作としても知られる、同時代のバンド像をよく伝える一枚である。

Balance is a work on which VAN HALEN, while keeping their bright dynamism, stepped into a heavier, more introspective coloring. Eddie Van Halen’s guitar functions not only as flashy technique but as texture that changes the songs’ air. Made amid rising tension within the band, it is a record rich in shadow. Moving between the openness of “Can't Stop Lovin' You” and the hardness of “The Seventh Seal,” the album shows the range of the Sammy Hagar period. Songs like “Not Enough,” “Amsterdam” and “Aftershock” breathe the band’s full expressiveness too. With melody and playing tension coexisting, it reached No. 1 on the US chart. Also known as the last studio album on which Hagar took part, it is a record that conveys the band of that era well.
