A Twisted Christmas

『A Twisted Christmas』は、TWISTED SISTERが定番のクリスマス・ソングを、ヘヴィ・メタルとグラム・メタルの語法で演奏したカヴァー企画作だ。原曲の知名度に頼るのではなく、バンド特有のリズムの押し出し、コーラスの厚み、ギターの鳴りへ置き換えることで、聴き慣れた曲が別の表情を見せる。再結成後の黄金期の布陣により、2006年に自らのプロデュースで制作された。 白眉は“Oh Come All Ye Faithful”で、この賛美歌はもともとバンドの代表曲“We're Not Gonna Take It”の下敷きになっており、本作ではその大ヒット曲そっくりの様式で蘇らせている。コミカルなミュージック・ビデオも作られ、80年代以降で最も知られた楽曲の一つとなった。“White Christmas”のリフには“I Wanna Rock”、“Silver Bells”にはAC/DCの“Problem Child”が引用されるなど、随所に遊びが仕込まれている。人を食った導入の“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”から、“Heavy Metal Christmas (The Twelve Days of Christmas)”の締めくくりまで、遊び心と演奏力が同居する。本編とは別軸の寄り道ながら、解釈の妙にバンドの美意識がにじむ一枚である。

A Twisted Christmas is a covers project on which Twisted Sister performs standard Christmas songs in the language of heavy and glam metal. Rather than leaning on the originals’ fame, it recasts familiar tunes through the band’s rhythmic push, thick choruses and guitar tone, letting well-known material show a different face. It was self-produced in 2006 by the reunited golden-era lineup. The highlight is “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”: this carol originally underlay the band’s signature “We're Not Gonna Take It,” and here it is revived in a style closely modeled on that huge hit. A comedic music video was made, and it became one of their best-known songs since the 1980s. Small jokes are planted throughout — the riff of “White Christmas” quotes “I Wanna Rock,” and “Silver Bells” quotes AC/DC’s “Problem Child.” From the sly opening of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to the closing “Heavy Metal Christmas (The Twelve Days of Christmas),” humor and musicianship coexist. A side trip apart from the main catalogue, it still shows the band’s taste in the way it interprets.
