The Endgame

『The Endgame』は、TREATの洗練されたメロディとロックの推進力を凝縮した、成熟期の快作である第九作だ。『Coup de Grace』に参加していたベーシスト、ナレ・ポールソンが再びメンバーに戻り、盤石の布陣で制作された。プロデュースは、『Tunguska』『Ghost of Graceland』も手掛けたピーター・モンソンが担当している。 “Freudian Slip”“Carolina Reaper”“Rabbit Hole”といった、多彩な楽曲が並ぶ。アップテンポなロックからバラード、80年代を思わせる楽曲まで、幅広い表情を備えている。バンドとしての歴史や、長年を共にした結束を映すタイトルにふさわしい、充実した内容だ。再結成後のTREATは、ノスタルジーに頼ることなく、一貫して質の高い新作を送り出し続けている。本作も、その充実した歩みを象徴する一枚だ。40年を超えるキャリアを経てなお、色褪せない創作力を示した一枚である。本作でヴィークストロムが構想した「集大成」というテーマは、2025年の『The Wild Card』へと引き継がれ、そこで一つの円環を描くことになる。

The Endgame is Treat's ninth album, an accomplished work of their mature period that concentrates Treat's refined melodies and rock drive. Bassist Nalle Påhlsson, who had appeared on Coup de Grace, returned to the lineup, and it was made with a rock-solid roster. Production was handled by Peter Månsson, who also worked on Tunguska and Ghost of Graceland. Varied songs like "Freudian Slip," "Carolina Reaper" and "Rabbit Hole" line up. From uptempo rockers to ballads and songs reminiscent of the 1980s, it holds a wide range of expressions. A fulfilling record, fitting for a title that reflects the band's history and the unity they have shared over the years. Since reuniting, Treat have continued to put out consistently high-quality new work, without relying on nostalgia. This record, too, symbolizes that fruitful journey. A record showing undimmed creativity even after a career of more than forty years. The 'endgame' theme Wikström conceived here would carry over into 2025's The Wild Card, where it comes full circle.
